The history of Chivas Regal can be traced back to Aberdeen and 1801 when the Chivas brothers James and John opened a grocery store selling and sourcing luxury goods. Success followed including a royal warrant in 1842 and by 1850 their wealthy clientele were demanding richer and smoother spirits. They began to blend whisky to create a house whisky, the precursor to what we know now.
In 1909 a 25 year old whisky was produced for the American market, often seen as the first luxury whisky and the brand found great success up until prohibition. Relaunched as a 12 year old after the 2nd World War. Seen as a fashionable brand, which was in large part due to an association with Frank Sinatra and other members of the Rat Pack, the future quality of the brand was assured with the acquisition of Strathisla, the distillery that contributes much of the base malt to the Chivas Regal blend. Currently owned by Pernod Ricard, the luxury element of the brand is perhaps most defined by the Royal Salute bottling, launched in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth's coronation and taking its name from the 21 gun salute. As such this whisky is aged for a minimum of 21 years.
How much is Chivas Regal?
In order to produce exceptional taste in their fine scotch whisky, Chivas Regal uses the finest corn, wheat and rye in the world and age their Scotch for many years. This elegant Scotch whisky is then blended to produce beautiful flavour and complexity. Hence some of the larger Chivas Regal price tags, yet most Whisky enthusiasts will agree that the younger blends such as Chivas Regal Blended Scotch 12 year old Whisky is very reasonably priced for the quality you get. What to mix with Chivas?
Chivas Regal Scotch whisky is best enjoyed neat, to appreciate its well-balanced flavours of smooth vanilla, hazelnuts and butterscotch, and hints of sea salt. Aromas of creamy vanilla and subtle hints of ripe melon also emerge in a Chivas Regal whisky glass.
The Chivas Regal is the preferred drink of many Scotch Whisky enthusiasts and for good reason. The distinct sweet oakwood nose that comes with Chivas Regal is something that every Scotch drinker will appreciate and savour as it dances on the tongue. This premium Scotch whisky is aged in a combination of American bourbon barrels, Spanish Oloroso sherry butts and Limousin oak wine casks, giving it a uniquely refined flavour that is sweet and smooth.
Is Chivas Regal 12 a good Scotch?
Chivas Regal 12 year old was awarded the Artisan Distiller of the Year award in 2014 in the International Whisky Competition, an honour it also won in 1999 and is one of the most highly regarded blends in Europe.
