The active ingredient in Nytol depends on which product you’re using.
Nytol Original, Nytol One-A-Night, and Nytol Liquid Caramel all contain an active ingredient called diphenhydramine.
This ingredients works by reducing the amount of time it takes for you to fall asleep and helping you to get better quality sleep.
On the other hand, the Nytol Herbal range uses a natural ingredient called valerian root, which is traditionally used to relieve sleep disturbances and promote calm.
Some Nytol Herbal products also contain hop strobile and passion flower, which are also traditionally used to help you relax and fall asleep.
Nytol products are designed to help you get a good nights sleep, and aren’t a remedy for anxiety.
However, Nytol herbal sleeping tablets may help to produce a sense of calm and relaxation when you’re trying to fall asleep, which may be ideal for those who are finding that their sleep is disturbed by racing thoughts and worries.
If you think you may be suffering from anxiety, we’d recommend speaking to your doctor and asking them to recommend a suitable treatment for you, including medications if necessary.
Nytol products aren’t suitable for children.
If your child is having trouble with sleepless nights or find it difficult to drop off at bedtime, we’d recommend speaking to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
They’ll be able to help recommend some lifestyle changes that could help your kids to fall asleep when bedtime rolls around.
Like all medications, Nytol products can have side effects, although you may not experience them yourself.
Naturally, you’ll probably feel drowsy or sleepy after using these products, as they’re designed to help you fall asleep, but there are other potential side effects too.
For a complete list of potential side effects of Nytol, we’d recommend taking a look at each product’s individual page, which will give you more detailed information about the treatment you want to use.
You’ll also be able to find a link to an up to date patient information leaflet, which is created by the manufacturer to help answer your questions about your medicines.
Having the odd night of inadequate sleep can make you feel tired and a little cranky, but it won’t have a serious impact on your overall health.
However, regularly not achieving a decent amount of sleep can have a huge effect on your health and put you at risk of developing severe medical conditions, as well as having a negative influence on your body, thoughts, emotions and behaviour.
For most people, it is recommended to achieve at least eight hours of good quality sleep to allow us to function at our best, with the importance placed more on the quality rather than the hours of sleep.
If you are waking up tired and spending the day feeling sleepy, chances are you’re not getting the correct amount or a decent quality of sleep which, over time, can have serious implications including:
- Increased risk of serious medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes – it can even take time off our life expectancy
- Mental health problems such as anxiety and depression
- Weight gain due to lower levels of leptin (the chemical that makes us feel full) and higher levels of ghrelin (the hormone that stimulates hunger).
Just goes to show, waking up on the wrong side of the bed can cause more issues than a grumpy mood!
