The Munich International Airport, also known as Franz Josef Strauss Airport (code IATA: MUC), it is located about 30 km north-east of the city center and it’s the largest airport of the city of Munich as well as the second largest hub in Germany. The Munich Airport sees a traffic of approximately 35 million passengers per year.

HISTORY:
The Munich International Airport was founded in 1992 and it was named after its founder, the politician Franz Josef Strauss, who played a prominent role in the Federal Republic of Germany from the 1950s until his death in 1988.
As the Governor of the state of Bavaria, Franz Strauss is considered one of the founding fathers of the European Airbus project.

THE AIRPORT STRUCTURE:
The structure of Munich Airport consists of 2 passenger terminals both including the arrivals and departures area. The Terminal 1 was unveiled in 1992 and comprises 6 modules (A, B, C, D, E, F) the first 4 host both arrivals and departures, hall E is dedicated only to arriving flights and hall F is intended for high security flights to Israel. The whole Terminal hosts a large quantity of services, restaurants and shops.
The Terminal 2, opened in 2003, and has an the same capacity of T1 of about 25 million passengers a year. The T2 is spread over several levels around a single central structure and it is used as a hub for Lufthansa, Star Alliance and other Lufthansa partners.
In 2016, a new building hosting the “Terminal 2 Satellite” came into operation; this, is managed by Lufthansa and the airport authority and has a capacity of around 11 million passengers per year. Those departing from this terminal, after the security checks to be carried out at T2, can reach the Terminal 2 Satellite in less than a minute thanks to an underground train. This terminal also offers many services such as duty free shops, bars and restaurants.
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are not connected to each other but they are within walking distance also a free shuttle bus service connecting the 2 terminal is constantly available. The Munich Airport Center (M.A.C.) is located in between the two terminals; this is a sort of shopping mall hosting events which is opened to both passengers and visitors.
